BIO ⟢

Sofia Gastaldo (b. 2003, IT) is a photographer and filmmaker working between Veneto and Île-de-France. She is currently studying Sociology at the University of Padua, where her research centers on the collective imagination, reinterpreted through a sociological lens. She is among the five photographers selected by Gaze Magazine, the MEP – Maison Européenne de la Photographie, and the French Ministry of Culture for the Nouvel Œil mentorship program.

Her visual practice moves across documentary photography and audiovisual forms, often rooted in fieldwork and relational dynamics. She explores the intersection between memory, meaning, and territory—particularly within post-industrial contexts. She would love to question the use of contemporary photography as a cognitive tool for exploring reality.

STATEMENT

I'm inspired by sociology as a lens to interpret the world, and my work as a photographer and filmmaker is a visual exploration of collective imagination. I focus on the intersection of personal and cultural narratives with a processual focus.

My projects draw from the north-estern part of Italy cultural and industrial heritage. My work revolves around dialogue and collaboration and relies on them to make sense. My current interests involve the concept of Risk Society applied to my home territory, politics and mythology an it’s influence on contemporary life.
